You Become What You Practice At Home

You Become What You Practice At Home. I recently heard this statement and it just resonated with me! I immediately went into action and started practicing a few things at home that has made my personal and professional life measurably better. The statement, You Become What You Practice was already part of my core values in every area of my life and I coach my client’s on this regularly, but the addition of At Home made this more meaningful to me because its easy to get “lazy” at home.

You see there are so many things we do out of habit, ritual and routine. And that’s a good thing! Can you imagine if you had to consciously think about every task you had to do including brushing your teeth, driving your car, etc. Let’s take driving your car for an example to demonstrate this clearly. Can you go back in time and think of the first day you took your drivers class or sat behind the wheel of a car as a student driver. If you were like me, you were excited, but you were nervous as heck! The insecurity that you were going to do something wrong  heightened your sense of awareness so that you thought about every movement. You had every right to feel this way! You didn’t want to hurt anyone, including yourself! It’s dangerous out there on the road, if you’re not paying attention. But you got through it and hopefully with ease. You passed your drivers exam and you were considered an adult, or at least that’s what you thought.

Now lets’ fast forward from the day you took your drivers test a few months, years or even decades. Do you remember how you drove today to work or to the grocery store. Of course not! You were probably busy talking on the phone telling someone how amazing your weekend was or how you can’t wait til Friday and it’s only Monday. The point is you didn’t give it a second thought on what you had to do to go from point A to B. It would be a burden if you had to focus like you did during your drivers test and you’d probably never want to drive. So point being is that driving, as well as many other habits in your life become automatic and require very little, if any thought or action to achieve a level of success that is satisfactory.

But we are not reading this blog or living our lives to just be satisfactory. Are you?! I hope not! Because I know I am not! And if you are content with being satisfactory, then I am going to challenge you to tweak your life in 2 specific areas that will living a life that is extraordinary.

Many lifestyle habits in your life are or were good for you. They helped get you to where you are today and I’m sure that’s a good place. However, many of those habits if tweaked just a little, I like to say 2mm because it’s barely noticeable and totally doable, and over time you will advance your life to levels that will measure to nothing less than EXTRAORDINARY. Doesn’t that sounds exciting?! YOU BET IT DOES!!

So how do you get there? Great question! I thought you’d never ask.

Here are 3 tips that will elevate your standards of life by practicing at home:

Tip #1: Practice kindness at home.  Practicing kindness sounds so simple. You’re right, it is. But too many of us don’t do it regularly. Kindness carries over into every area of your life including your health and fitness because when you are kind to others you get the opportunity to create a positive environment not just externally, but internally. It feels great to be kind to someone, especially those in your home like your mother, father, husband, wife, children, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, cousin, pet, etc. Because chances any one of those people will be kind back to you and that feels good. Practicing kindness also helps you to be kind to yourself, numero uno!

Tip #2: Practice gratitude at home. We take for granted the space in which we live in like our home, our neighborhood, city, state or country. They say, “Home is where the heart is.” Home is the place where you can create love, peace, acceptance, recovery, rejuvenation, healing, warmth and comfort to name a few. Be appreciative of what you have now and you’ll find yourself feeling more healthy and fit emotionally.

Tip #3: Take Tip #1 and #2 and practice it in the real world. Practicing kindness and gratitude in public is what will make the world a better place. Giving someone a smile, thanking someone who offers a little help, giving spare change or even a $20 to the homeless person at the stop light, letting a coworker know you’re grateful to be working with them and/or simply being grateful that you are alive is going to set you up for a better quality of life. Trust me! This stuff works, if you work it!!!

If you think you’re already there and you’ve got kindness and gratitude mastered, I challenge you to think again. Look at yourself in the mirror and get honest with yourself. Please! There’s always 2mm more to tweak in any area of your life to be better. Again I am sure what you are doing is good or even great, but just think about how you could do just a little more.

Forty-five years ago in 1969, we sent a man to the Moon in what would be the pinnacle of space exploration. Now today we are only years away from walking on Mars. Think about it! Mars….Yup I think Mars is a little more than just a few mm away.  Go for it and have fun!

Cumulative Stress Is A Silent Killer

Getting your day started off on the right foot isn’t as easy as 1,2, 3. But it’s a practice that can be as easy in 1-2-3 action steps.

Today more than ever there are so many distractions at the tip of your fingers using smart phones or tablets. Work emails, family disputes, staying up late at night binge watching Netflix, battling traffic in your daily commute or eating late at night all can be ways that add stress to your mind and body and begin the  cumulative stress cycle. Cumulative stress is a silent killer! It’s not the stress that makes you want to shout, jump from fear, or beep your horn at a driver who isn’t paying attention. No, It’s the stress that adds up over time that we don’t see, feel, hear, touch or smell because we’ve become so immune to it. However, if you leave your current lifestyle to say a lifestyle somewhere on a remote island free from all the distraction of life and go back to your original routine, you’ll notice one or many of these stressors because your mind and body have adapted to the new, calmer way of life.

Like training a muscle that needs to flex and be strong we can train and adapt our minds to be more positive and stress free.

I recommend these 3 simple, but very effective tips to my clients.

  1. Upon waking have a daily mantra that you repeat out loud or in your head while get ready. My mantra is, “ Today I am the possibility of Love, Passion and Abundance!” I say this over about 3-5 times and with each passing day I get more and more comfortable saying it and my daily actions reflect the positivity in this mantra.
  2. I tell someone you love them or that you are grateful for them in your household or business, it can be a significant partner, child, pet, friend, roommate, family member, coworker, boss or even the person at Starbucks who serves your coffee. It doesn’t have to be in person, you could call or text someone. This starts the selfless attitude of giving without expectation. When we give without expectation we  become happier.
  3. Last but not least, sit in silence for 5-10 minutes a day in a meditative state that allows you to “JUST BE”. Clearing your thoughts, your concerns, anxieties and expectations allows you to leave the house with a clear mind, an open heart and a peaceful disposition.

Don’t worry or feel inadequate if you can not do this consistently and/or if you have trouble the first several times. Like anything we try the first time we typically are not perfect at it. What would happen to us all if we stopped trying to walk the first time we tried…we’d all be snails. 🙂

6 Tips To Age Better, According To Science by UMD

6 Tips To Age Better, According To Science
University of Maryland

I am a proud graduate from the University of Maryland where I received my bachelor of science degree in Kinesiology. Today the UMD School of Pubic Health graduate program is ranked #22 by US News reports. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/public-health-rankings

It has been an honor to recently be reunited with this departments mission to change the health education and awareness on a global level for all populations. And very soon it will give me great pleasure to announce my contribution that the School of Public Health and I have been planning to add value and contribution to their global mission.

But for now I’d like to post a recent article posted in the Huffington Post that one of our Fearless Graduates wrote. Please find the value and information to help ignite and/or stay motivated to continue on your journey to optimal health and fitness. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/how-to-age-better-research-advice_us_587565d3e4b092a6cae3ac26?ir=Healthy+Living&utm_hp_ref=healthy-living

Refuel Your Body With Water In The Morning

I get the question, “What do you eat or drink in the monring?” probably more than any other health and fitness question. I think the reason why is because subconsciously or consciously we know that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Come on, we’ve been hearing that for decades and if I were alive for over 100 years, probably centuries. It really is the most important meal of the day so pay attention to what I am about to say, follow these simple instructions and change your life with this foolproof routine.

I am going to paint a picture for you that has nothing to do with food or beverages to help get my simple point across and really drive this home. You wake up in the morning and you get yourself prepared to go to work. You get into you gasoline or electric car to find the tank or charge is almost empty. What’s the first thing you think of? Yes. “I have to get gas or I have to give this a quick charge  to get to work.” and/or “I need to be more mindful and plan better so that my car has a full tank of gas or charge to avoid stress.” Either one of these answers would be legitimate, and preferably the latter.

You came up with a rational answer because your “WHY?” was big enough to make you come up with a clear and concise answer to a challenge/problem that creates a ritual, habit or practice. You will not be perfect and you’ll mess up here and there, but that doesn’t stop you from implementing this because you know the benefits out way the negatives.

So back to the question, “What do you eat or drink first thing in the morning?” My answer ALWAYS is “WATER”. H20 baby! Our bodies dehydrate and lose water in our sleep. Research shows that you can burn up to 500 calories in an 8 hr sleep cycle and lose up to an average of 1lb of water weight. So technically you body and cells are on empty or do not have a full charge when you wake up, just like the car being empty of fuel in my previous example. And water makes up to 75% of fluids in your body.

My question to you is, “Why wouldn’t you fuel up your body in the morning with water like you’d fuel up your car if it were low on gas or a charge?” Especially now that you know this information. Most people don’t know why and don’t have an answer other than maybe, “I’m too busy.” You should never, ever be too busy to drink water, the fluid of life. I get it, you’ve been not doing it for so long, so why start now. You can perform without it, you drink coffee or juice. But those drinks and your morning routine is not a recipe for optimal heath and fitness. We’ve all engaged in negative habits that don’t support the mind any body, and we’ve gotten away with it. Until you find your mind any body start to show signs of aging or degeneration like bad skin, irregular moods, bad breath, constipation, lack of energy, lack of focus, weak immune system and the list goes on and on.

So the first thing I eat or drink in the morning is WATER. My client’s are the owners of Fiji water and I am very lucky to get this water delivered to my house weekly. So I drink 1-2 bottle of water before I eat or drink anything else. Typically I wait until I urinate which is a sign to me that the water I digested has passed and cleaned me out. The water gives me energy, makes me feel great, wakes up my mind and body for the activities ahead of me and prepares my digestion. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years plus. I’m going to be turning 42 years old in a few weeks and I know without a shadow of a doubt that my consumption of water first thing in the morning and throughout my day has helped me age gracefully and kept me healthy and fit.

Start today to feel and see the benefits that drinking WATER first thing in the morning will bring you.

Healthy and Fit Can Be Contagious

Drake Stadium
Drake Stadium at UCLA where many students, faculty and locals in the community go regularly to run, walk, climb and exercise. One of my favorite places to exercise in Los Angeles too.

I started working with a very busy real estate executive named Robin about six weeks ago who travels often for work, lives between two cities (Orange County and Los Angeles) forcing her to commute 4 hrs a week, has the typical demanding work load and a typical schedule for most executives at her level. And on top of all these challenges, Robin’s goal is to lose 70 lbs to attain optimal health and fitness so her inner star can shine brighter.

Robin and I met six week ago through a fortuitous introduction by one of my colleagues, Derek whom I’ve known and worked with for almost a decade. Derek works with Robin’s company to supply gym equipment to their real estate residential buildings. Robin addressed the need and want of a personal trainer to Derek so he recommended she work with me and coincidently, Robins office is in the same building as my private health and fitness studio, Acceleration. And so our working relationship was born.

Robin is no stranger to the demands put on the mind and body to lose weight because she’s done this successfully several times. However, I told Robin, “I will be the last and best trainer you’ve ever had! Not because I want to work with you for the rest of your life or that I’m cocky. But because my goal for you is to lose the 70 lbs and keep those 70 lbs off for the rest of your life!” Needless to say she was a bit skeptical, but excited for that possibility.

In the past six weeks, Robin has lost 10.5 lbs or another way of looking at it and my preferred way, is that she’s 15% toward her goal. Robin is shining and is starting to inspire those around her causing others in her personal and professional life to become motivated to get active. This is why Being Healthy and Fit Can Be Contagious.

The reason why I am writing about this is because Robin was ecstatic about the responses she’s getting from others in her life. She shared a text message with me that showed the positive responses from several people in her office who she invited to go for a walk with her at the UCLA campus track. Because Robin is shining brighter, feeling more energy and wanting to share the positivity with others she was able to rally a small group for a rigorous walk. Furthermore, Robins husband, who is for the most sedentary, has gone for walks with her over the past two weekends. She couldn’t be more thrilled to have her partner in life share in her health and fitness journey, but also begin that journey for himself organically.

Here are two of my healthy and fit prescriptions I give to all my clients.

  1. Share with others such as family, friends and coworkers what your goals are and why this is important to you and how they could support you.
  2. Recruit others to be healthy and fit with you. For example, ask your spouse to go for a walk with you or coworkers to meet you at the park for a jog. This way you won’t feel like you’re doing it alone and you’re building a healthy and fit community around you for long term success.

I am super excited for Robin and those in her life that she’s inspiring to be better in their own health and fitness pursuits. This is a clear example of some of the benefits one can expect when their inner star shines brighter through the pursuit of optimal health and fitness.
